Embracing Collective Wisdom, Action, and Imperfection

3 Thoughts From Me

I.
Throughout history, over 108 billion people have walked this earth, each contributing their own experiences, failures, and discoveries. Today, there are around 8.1 billion people alive, but the lessons we inherit come from the trials and errors of countless generations before us. In the world of design, this cumulative wisdom is a powerful tool. Every time you sketch a new concept, choose a colour palette, or plan a space, you're drawing on a vast reservoir of insights passed down through time. The designs we create today are not just a product of our individual creativity—they're a continuation of the collective knowledge that has evolved over centuries. As designers, we are not isolated geniuses. Our work is enriched by the ideas and solutions of those who came before us. As historian Niall Ferguson reminds us, “The dead outnumber the living fourteen to one, and we ignore the accumulated experience of such a huge majority of mankind at our peril.” So, as you embark on your next design project, remember: you’re not just creating something new. You’re also tapping into a legacy of human ingenuity, refining and building upon it. This is the greatest gift you can receive—and it’s one that keeps giving, shaping the future of design.
II.
Life is short. This simple truth carries profound implications for us as designers. If life is fleeting, then the pace at which we move becomes crucial. Don’t wait for the perfect moment to launch your design project, submit your portfolio, or propose that bold idea. Get your concepts out there. Test them. Refine them. The longer you wait, the more opportunities slip away. Of course, thoughtful design is essential, but don’t let perfectionism paralyse you. The best ideas often emerge through action, iteration, and learning from feedback. So, take the leap—launch that product, sketch that concept, pitch that vision. In design, as in life, momentum is everything. Thoughtfulness is your guide, but movement is your power.
III.
In the world of design, the pursuit of perfection can be a double-edged sword. It’s easy to get caught up in crafting the perfect plan, but the truth is, an imperfect start is always better than endless planning. Start now. Sketch that initial idea. Experiment with that layout. An imperfect beginning gives you something tangible to refine, to build upon. Design is an iterative process—every draft, every prototype is a step closer to the final vision. You can always optimise, tweak, and polish as you go. But obsessing over a flawless plan? That can leave you stuck, with nothing to show for all your careful thinking. So, embrace imperfection. Let the design process evolve as you go. Action breeds progress, and progress leads to great design.

1 Question For You

In a world where we stand on the shoulders of countless innovators and creators before us, how long will you delay tapping into your true potential, sticking to what feels comfortable instead of embracing the imperfect beginnings that lead to real growth?
