Growing at your own pace
Some kinds of growth make a room go quiet.
Everyone notices them.
The slower kinds often pass without witness.
But they still change a life.
Everyone notices them.
The slower kinds often pass without witness.
But they still change a life.
3 Thoughts From Me
I.
Fast growth can look very convincing from the outside.
New work.
New attention.
New expectations.
And then one day you realise your nervous system never came with you.
II.
Mastery is not especially glamorous in the middle.
It often looks like repetition.
It can feel like being left behind by louder people.
You keep returning to the same problems.
You notice smaller things.
Other people may call that slow.
Sometimes it is just depth.
III.
Sometimes the strain is not from the work itself.
It comes from staying with something that no longer feels like yours.
You can still do it well.
Other people can still value it.
But there is a small sense of distance you cannot quite ignore.
And it tends to grow the longer you stay.
2 Quotes From Others
I.
On patience
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart.”
(letters, 1903)
This can feel true when things are named too quickly, before they have had time to be properly lived.
II.
On how a life is shaped
“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”
(book, 1989)
This can feel settling because it brings things back to the ordinary shape of a day.
1 Question For You
What in your work feels slow, but quietly true?
With thanks,
David

P.S. Not every worthwhile thing arrives with momentum. Some things arrive with steadiness.
