Master Your Craft: Focus on the Details, Surround Yourself with Growth

3 Thoughts From Me

I.
"To improve, compare small details. The texture of materials, the alignment of furniture, the way natural light hits a room at different times of day. Mastery in design, like in life, comes from refining these little elements. The more attention you give them, the more your work—and your habits—evolve into something extraordinary.” The magic is always in the details!
II.
“If you want to be in the top 1% of designers, you can’t follow the safe, predictable designs of the 99%. You must step outside the norm and take bold creative risks. We are naturally inclined to imitate, but the further you want to push your design career, the more intentionally you need to surround yourself with like-minded innovators.” Mistakes of ambition: Designing a space that challenges conventions. Creating an interior that pushes boundaries but doesn’t land perfectly. Mistakes of hesitation: Sticking to safe, predictable designs. Consuming inspiration without taking risks. Innovative design comes from ambitious mistakes, not from following the crowd.
III.
“Most designers need consistency more than they need bold, intense efforts. Intensity: Redesign an entire home in one weekend. Launch a high-concept design project overnight. Overhaul your workspace in a day. Consistency: Refine your design skills by working on a room each week. Consistently experiment with new furniture layouts. Spend time daily perfecting colour palettes and textures. Intensity creates dramatic results, but consistency builds true expertise and lasting progress.”

2 Quotes From Others

I.
“Trifles make perfection, and perfection is no trifle.”
— Michelangelo
This quote reflects the importance of focusing on the smallest details, as it is these minor elements that elevate a design to the next level.
II.
“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”
— Leonardo da Vinci
Da Vinci’s words highlight the beauty of simplicity, Embrace simplicity. The fewer unnecessary elements, the more sophisticated the design becomes.

1 Question For You

“The people who have already walked through the fire can help you do the same. Who are you surrounding yourself with." Now, in design and in life, it’s the small, refined changes that lead to mastery. But it’s not just about what you focus on—it’s about who you surround yourself with. So, as you refine your craft and your habits: Are you surrounding yourself with people who help you grow, both in your work and your mindset?
With thanks,
David
