On attention, care, and honest design

It’s been a week of juggling tabs and switching gears. I’ve been thinking about how attention works, and how quietly it shapes everything we make.
Some notes on where we place it, and why.

3 Thoughts From Me

I.
You don’t need to have all the answers before you begin. You just need to be willing to stay in the work. Momentum comes from small, steady effort. Not clarity, not confidence.
II.
Design often starts with curiosity. But it only deepens with care. What you choose to notice is what you’ll learn to shape. What you ignore won’t get better.
III.
We like to think we’re rational. But we usually want comfort, approval, or certainty. Understanding that can help you design more honestly .For others, and for yourself.

2 Quotes From Others

I.
On Focus:
“You do something all day long, don’t you? ... The trouble lies in the fact that people do not have an object, one thing, to which they stick, letting all else go.”
— Thomas Edison
(Interview, 1901) Most of the time, distraction is just a lack of aim.
II.
On Fuel:
“Reading is the nourishment that lets you do interesting work.”
— Jennifer Egan
(Life Advice, 2018) Input shapes output. Choose wisely.

1 Question For You

What’s something you can give your full attention to this week?
With thanks,
David
P.S. Most distractions are optional. Most good work is not.
