The tone we live with
Some weeks the mind feels crowded before the day has properly begun.
You can be sitting with a cup of coffee and already feel late to your own life.

3 Thoughts From Me
I.
The biggest barrier to learning is not always difficulty.
Sometimes it is the part of you that wants to look settled.
The part that would rather appear certain than be changed.
I notice this in work more than anywhere else.
A familiar way of doing things can start to feel like a defence.
II.
The voice in your head can turn a small wobble into a full weather system.
A quiet mistake at ten in the morning can sound like a verdict by lunch.
It is strange how quickly we can become harsh with ourselves.
Especially when the work matters.
Especially when someone else is waiting on us.
Especially when we are tired and trying to stay decent.
III.
Most of what we leave behind is not the finished thing.
It is the feeling people had around us while it was being made.
A hurried reply.
A patient pause.
The way a room changed when we entered it.
These things travel further than we think.
2 Quotes From Others
I.
On learning
“The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.”
(quotation reference, 2016)
There can be a quiet comfort in staying with what already feels known.
II.
On self talk
“We give ourselves compassion not to feel better, but because we feel bad.”
(journal article and practice essay, 2019 and 2021)
There is relief in hearing something said without decoration.
1 Question For You
What kind of tone have you been living with in your own head this week?
With thanks,
David

P.S. Not everything important announces itself while it is happening. Some things only show their weight once they have had time to travel.
