Transform Your Design: Habits and Mindsets for Success
3 Thoughts From Me
I.
"Gut reactions can either be very wrong or very right.
They’re often wrong when driven by pure emotion, especially in areas where you lack experience. But they’re usually right when they come from deep understanding and a well-developed design sense.
Trust your gut when your experience gives you the confidence to back it up.
II.
Negotiation Insights for Designers
You want leverage.
The designer who creates more value holds leverage.
The one who can walk away has leverage.
If you’re irreplaceable, you have leverage.
Having a backup plan means you have leverage.
Knowing the budget and numbers gives you leverage.
Being someone others enjoy working with gives you leverage.
The designer who asks for more, often gets more.
Remember, most negotiations aren’t one-offs. If people still like you after this one, you’ll be in a better position for the next.
III.
“The fact that you refine your skills, even when you’re already good enough… is why you excel.
The fact that you invest in quality materials, even when you could cut corners… is why your work stands out.
Your design habits build your strength.”
2 Quotes From Others
I.
On the power of habits and self-discipline:
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
II.
On leveraging experience and instinct:
“To know oneself, one should assert oneself.”
1 Question For You
Question for reflection:
What can you remove from your design process, your workspace, or your life that would improve it?
With thanks,
David
