On What You’re Given and What You Build
Some people are born into beauty or brilliance. Others have to build it from scratch. There’s pride in both. But the second kind takes more noticing.
3 Thoughts From Me
I.
You don’t choose your taste, your eye, or your background. But you do choose what to do with them. The work is showing up despite the story you were handed. That’s where design becomes personal.
II.
Time is precious because it runs out. You don’t have to be efficient with it, but you do have to be honest. Ask: is this how I want to be spending my afternoon?
III.
Talent may open the door, but patience keeps the room warm. Good genes are helpful. But I trust the person who’s learned to work with their limits.
2 Quotes From Others
I.
On making the most of what you have
“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”
(Journal, 1851)
This reminds me that our tools, spaces, and circumstances are only part of the picture. What we notice, and how we respond, is where design really begins. There’s often more possibility than we first allow ourselves to see.
II.
On the balance of effort and ease
“Working hard is important. But there is something that matters even more - believing in yourself.”
(Speech, 2008)
I used to think everything worthwhile had to be earned through strain. But sometimes it’s the quiet confidence, not the push, that carries the work forward. There’s strength in trusting your own rhythm.
1 Question For You
Where in your day do you feel most in charge of your time?
