The Tiredness of Too Many Options

Has it been one of those weeks?
Everything feels slightly too open.
Too many tabs.
Too many thoughts.
Too many possible directions.
Nothing has gone wrong.
Yet something feels unsettled.
A quiet sense that everything is available.
And nothing is chosen.
There is a particular kind of tiredness in that.

3 Thoughts From Me

I.
When every option stays open, we tell ourselves we are being careful. We call it flexibility. We call it keeping momentum. But sometimes it is just reluctance to decide. Choosing one direction can feel harder than keeping our options open.
II.
There is a kind of eagerness we slowly learn to hide. We try to appear measured. Less excitable. More considered. Yet the work that means the most to us still begins with that quick lift inside. It is hard to replace that with strategy.
III.
We rarely value the parts that do not show. The quiet edits. The drafts no one reads. The restraint in a difficult conversation. The steady return to the same page. These things do not look impressive. But they take something real from us.

2 Quotes From Others

I.
On limitation
“The more constraints one imposes, the more one frees one's self.”
— Igor Stravinsky
(Interview, 1962) We can feel calmer when we remember that narrowing the field can create space, not remove it.
II.
On eagerness
“Stay hungry. Stay foolish.”
— Steve Jobs
(Stanford commencement address, 2005) We sometimes forget that caring deeply is not something we need to grow out of.

1 Question For You

What are you holding right now that you could gently put down?
With thanks,
David
P.S. We do not have to hold every possibility at once. It is enough to hold one thing well.
