Better ways, better timing, bolder asks

It’s strange how often the best approach shows up after the work is done.
Or how a few hours can change the tone of a conversation entirely. Some things only become clear by going through them the wrong way first.

3 Thoughts From Me

I.
Sometimes there is no single “best” way to do something. There’s just the version that works best for you, right now. That changes with time and energy and context
II.
You can say the same words at two different times and get completely different outcomes. Communication is shaped by more than what you say. Timing is part of your message.
III.
If you don’t ask for something a little unreasonable now and then, you don’t learn what’s possible. Sometimes the person on the other side says yes. Sometimes they were just waiting for you to ask.

2 Quotes From Others

I.
On timing.
“I don’t like things to be too perfect. I like things to have a bit of life.”
— Paul Smith
(Interview, 2011) There’s a window where things feel just right. Wait too long, and it can go stale. Go too early, and it might not land.
II.
On asking.
“Never be afraid to ask for too much. The worst they can say is no.”
— Marina Abramović
(Talk, 2015) What feels too much to you might feel completely reasonable to someone else. You won’t know unless you ask.

1 Question For You

What’s one request you haven’t made because it felt too bold?
With thanks,
David
P.S. It’s alright if the better way comes later. That’s how better ways are found.
