Design Better Spaces: Start Simple, Focus, Build Habits

3 Thoughts From Me

I.
Start Simple, Refine as You Go If you haven’t started, then taking action is more important than finding a better strategy. If you’re already in motion, make sure it’s the right path rather than just working harder. Your effort creates a solid foundation; your strategy raises the bar.” In design, as in life, it’s easy to get stuck perfecting every detail before starting. But there’s value in action. Start with small, meaningful steps. As you gain momentum, refine your approach to maximise results.
II.
Write to Connect, Design to Inspire Here are a few timeless tips for more impactful writing—and they work wonders in design too: Focus on what fascinates you; it draws people in. Convey one idea per visual or space, keeping it simple. Use storytelling to create a narrative in your work. Cut any “extras”—only include what truly matters. Step back and review your work out loud (or visually). Share it; knowing others will see it raises your game. Finally, be mindful of what you consume. Just as quality ideas inspire quality output in writing, the spaces you absorb shape the designs you produce. Make each piece a reflection of something meaningful.
III.
Design Your Habits, Shape Your Outcomes “Your outcomes are a reflection of your habits. Your space reflects your design habits. Your finances mirror your money habits. Your knowledge follows your learning habits. You get what you repeat.” In design, just like in life, the little things we do regularly add up. Whether it’s choosing quality materials, keeping spaces organised, or investing time in creative exploration, consistency shapes the final outcome. Design is never just about single choices; it’s the cumulative effect of many small, intentional actions.

2 Quotes From Others

On the Power of Taking Action and Refining Along the Way:
“Do not wait; the time will never be 'just right.' Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command.”
— Napoleon Hill
II.
On Consistency and Habit in Shaping Outcomes:
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”
— Aristotle

1 Question For You

"Am I happy with the tradeoffs I am making in my life right now?" When we make choices—whether in design or in daily life—there’s always a tradeoff. This question invites us to consider if those tradeoffs align with our goals and values.
With thanks,
David
