Losing Well, Saying It Straight, and Notes You Keep to Yourself

A quiet start this week. Some thoughts on things we don’t always say out loud. Losing well. Being clear. Taking notes you don’t show anyone.

3 Thoughts From Me

I.
Losing can be a kind of relief. You’re no longer chasing. You just see things as they are. It clears the noise, especially when you let it.
II.
People don’t always know what you expect of them. You think they do. You wish they did. But clarity only comes when you say it plainly, early on.
III.
I’ve started keeping a page titled “Notes to Self”. Small things I forget in the moment. None of it’s profound. But reading it back helps me stay steady.

2 Quotes From Others

I.
On failure
“Failure is very cleansing, and success is very confusing.”
— Leonard Cohen
(Interview, 2001) This reminds me that letting go of the outcome can be freeing. It leaves room to try again with less fear and more honesty.
II.
On setting expectations
“Be clear about your intentions and you will have fewer misunderstandings.”
— Sister Corita Kent
(Teaching, 1970) This has helped me realise how often silence creates confusion. Saying it out loud doesn’t have to be perfect, just kind and true.

1 Question For You

When was the last time you changed your mind about something important?
With thanks,
David
P.S. Sometimes losing is the start of seeing again.
