Starting Softly

The pressure of January has softened a little.
You can see it in the slower pace at crossings, the way light pools on the pavement.
You’re not the only one who’s still finding their way into the year.

3 Thoughts From Me

I.
You don’t always realise the moment was quiet until it’s gone. The kettle boiling, no notifications yet. A hand resting on your back without words. The minutes after someone leaves, and you just sit. It wasn’t dramatic, but it held you.
II.
It’s easier to keep something going when it feels small and ordinary. Not a “habit” with a name, but something you just do. You refill your glass when you notice it’s low. You open a window. You check in with someone because they crossed your mind. It counts.
III.
You can feel excited and unsure at the same time. Starting the year doesn’t mean knowing what you’re doing. It might just mean feeling something stir again. Wanting to try. Even if the ground still feels a bit slippery. That’s not confusion. That’s aliveness.

2 Quotes From Others

I.
On stillness
“There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in.”
— Leonard Cohen
(song lyric, 1992) It reminds me that quiet isn’t empty, it’s a place where something softer can reach you.
II.
On care
“To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work.”
— Mary Oliver
(poem, 1983) I keep thinking about how paying attention is its own kind of love.

1 Question For You

When do you feel most at ease being yourself, without trying?
With thanks,
David
P.S. You’re allowed to move slowly. Even in a world that rewards speed.
